Finnish Horns was formed in Finland in 2004 by a group of versatile and talented horn players. This group of young musicians came together in attempt to create a professional horn section that could perform in different occations and in various different music styles locally and internationally. The core group consists of three members: Jussi Paavola (Saxophones, Flute), Heikki Tuhkanen (Trombone) and Janne Toivonen (Trumpet). Group can also be expanded if required. For instance, in the recording with the group Future Warriors, another trumpet was added to fill the needs of the recording session.

During their relatively short period of existence, the horn section has been able to collaborate with an impressive range of artists and groups. The most recent release that features Finnish Horns was recorded in Finland and released during the summer of 2007. This album from the Flexatones called “Originals” is an exellent cross-section of reggae music produced in Finland featuring various artists like Earl 16, Molara and Nicole Willis. Another recently released album was recorded in Martinique and released in December 2006. This Paco Charlery album called “Pitit Mwen” is an interesting blend of French Caribbean jazz music and Latin jazz. The album includes 7 tracks with the horn section, with 6 of them arranged by the Finnish Horns.

Year 2006 was very productive for the group besides the things mentioned above. DVD by Michele Henderson. “Live At The 9th Annual World Creole Music Festival” was recorded in Dominica and it contains a dynamic, full length performance on Michele and hers group with the Horn Section. 2006 started with a very intensive project, working with calypso songs for the Dominica’s carnival. It resulted with 14 songs, including the winning track “I Eh Fraid” of the Calypso King Dice. During the summer, after a tour in North Europe with Michele Henderson, The Finnish Horns spent 6 weeks in the West Indies, performing, recording and arranging for different artists and groups in Martinique and Dominica including Jean Phillip Marthely, Les 5 Elements, Michele Henderson and Paco Charlery. The year was culminated with a performance at a jazz festival in Martinique with Paco Charlery. The festival, called “Jazz En Francophonie” was held in the prestigious L’Atrium concert hall. In the past, Finnish Horns has also recorded with artists and groups such as the Light Man And The Flexatones, Momo Cat and the Future Warriors. For instance in 2005, their collaboration with the Future Warriors created a track “Pembe” which was released on the well-known UK based Far Out label.

Apart from the studio work they have performed in various countries in venues and festivals such as the Roskilde festival in Denmark and the World Creole Music Festival in Dominica, West Indies. The year 2008 will introduce more releases with the horn section. There are various records under construction, and at least we’ll expect an album from Momo Cat to be released soon from the Fat Belt Records.

In the future Finnish Horns will concentrate on promoting their work to the international market as well as expanding their already impressive musical territory that includes Funk, Afrobeat, Zouk, Reggae, Jazz, R&B and Latin Jazz, just to mention a few. Finnish Horns is a group that combines creativity and versatility together with execution and sound that is hard to match
