Heikki Tuhkanen
HEIKKI TUHKANEN

Heikki was practically predetermined to join the world of music, being born and brought up in all-musician family. First serious contact with music was under eye of one of the most famous classical music teachers in Finland, Csaba Szilway, playing cello when 5 years old. He got encouraged to pick up the trombone at the age of 11 and joining big band summercamp sprang up his interest in jazz.

In the spring of 1999 he formed a jazz band with friends from Savonlinna Art High School, where he begun to study following fall. During his high school years he started composing as well as keeping himself busy by taking trombone lessons, playing in various ensambles and regularly commuting between Helsinki and Savonlinna. In 2001 he got accepted into pop & jazz conservatory in Helsinki where he met both Jussi Paavola and Janne Toivonen, and established contacts with the group of diverse musicians and various bands. Heikki gratuated from pop & jazz conservatory in 2005 and went directly to the jazz-department one of the most respected music universities in Europe, Sibelius Academy.

Heikki was playing in big bands led by Bob Mintzer, Bill Watrous and Peter Herbolzheimer. Since 18 years old, Heikki was regularly invited to play with the most famous big band in Finland, UMO. With years of professional experience under his belt by age of 22, he seamlessly combines and indulges in playing jazz, classical, pop, rock, blues, funk, disco, electronic, hip-hop, gospel, folk, ska, reggae, salsa, other Afro-Caribbean and African styles working with numerous bands and orchestras, sometimes getting involved even in musicals and varietee shows. Heikki's goal is to keep developing his skills as an improviser, instrumentalist and as a composer until he slides away.

During the last year, most of Heikki's time he has been spent in studios working with different groups, playing live gigs and arranging horns and strings. And off course, working with the Finnish Horns.
