Janne Toivonen
JANNE TOIVONEN

Janne was born and raised in the town of Ilmajoki near the west coast of Finland. He started playing the trumpet during his early childhood from a classical basis. After awhile, he got noticed by other musicians around and soon found himself playing in various local groups. As the years went by, and his skills developed, he came to the point were he put his main focus on music. While he was already arranging and composing music for various bands, he realized that it was the time to move on and soon he settled in Helsinki to study music professionally.

Classical music was also beginnig to shfit to the background when jazz entered the scene. He discovered Lee Morgan as one of his main influences and it wasn't long after living in Helsinki when he got in to the jazz department of the prestigeous Sibelius Academy.

Janne has studied jazz music for several years now. At the moment, he is working with several groups on the jazz club scene of Finland, including award-winning jazz group ‘Reactor-5’, electric ambience group ‘Pasifik Ensemble’ and jazz group ‘Korma’, among others. He studied the trumpet with teachers like Tim Hagans, Ingrid Jensen and Bobby Shew, just to mention a few. Janne is also performing and recording with the Finnish Horns. Either as a soloist or a section player, he is involved in various projects including musicians from all over Finland and Europe, covering a range of styles from ethnic free jazz and electro-fusion to nasty funk and hot afro-caribbean rhythms.
